The Wall

Why do I hide? What is this wall that I have put up?
Yes, it was I who put up the wall between us. This wall
of stone and mortar built so high that no one can ever look over.
Is it to protect me from you? Or just to hold me in for fear
that you’ll hate who I really am?

And there I stand peeking around my wall at the world
I’m so very afraid of, yet wanting so badly to exist in.
Why can’t I just let go? Just take one step out and then another.
What part of me can’t let go of this safe place? This cold and lonely
place from where I watch as life goes by. Why do I hide?
